Ballymaloe Relish is an original family recipe, which was created by Myrtle Allen of Ballymaloe House in the 1930s. Ballymaloe House is a family-run country house hotel famous for it’s outstanding hospitality and superb food located in rural East Cork, Ireland. It is internationally recognised as the home of Irish country cuisine and where the recipe for our Ballymaloe Original Relish was born. Myrtle and Ivan Allen opened the historic country house, their home, to the public in 1964 as a guesthouse. Her relish quickly became a popular request from customers.
Myrtle Allen developed the recipe from tomatoes grown on the family farm. Her husband, Ivan was quite a futuristic farmer at the time and grew tomatoes. However, when he went to sell his produce in the local markets, nobody knew what tomatoes were at the time so he was left with a large excess stock. Myrtle quickly seized the opportunity to put the tomatoes to good use and developed our Ballymaloe Original Relish recipe. It soon became very popular with guests at the hotel and in the local markets.
Myrtle’s daughter, Yasmin saw the market potential in this product and started producing Ballymaloe Original Relish in the house’s kitchen for local restaurants and shops. Yasmin quickly outgrew this small space and moved into purposely-built kitchens a short journey away from Ballymaloe House in 1990. The business is now in its third generation and Yasmin’s daughter; Maxine has been engrained in the business from a young age. The company has grown and expanded steadily overtime.
All Ballymaloe products are gently cooked in a traditional way using all natural, top quality ingredients.
